Why the canal water level matters

The water level of the Amsterdam canals fluctuates with wind, rainfall and the city’s water level management. For skippers this determines how much room is left under bridges: a higher water level means less clearance, a lower one means more.

GrachtAlert fetches the water level every hour from the Surinamekade measuring station and compares it against Amsterdam Ordnance Datum (NAP), with -40 cm NAP as the normal value, so you can see at a glance whether the canal water level is normal, elevated or low.

This water level is also exactly what GrachtAlert’s route planner takes into account: for every bridge on your route the current clearance is calculated from the latest measurement, so you know in advance whether your boat fits under everything.
