GrachtAlert: routes, water level & incident reporting for the canals of Amsterdam

GrachtAlert brings together everything you need on Amsterdam’s waterways: a route planner that accounts for bridge clearances, congestion and closures, the current water level of the Amsterdam canals, and a reporting point for nuisance and incidents — from thrown water balloons and eggs to obstacles in the water and swimmers in the waterway.

The route planner calculates the current clearance of every bridge on your route based on the water level, accounts for one-way traffic such as on the Prinsengracht, and automatically routes around active closures — so you’re never caught off guard along the way.

The water level is fetched every hour from the Surinamekade measuring station and compared against Amsterdam Ordnance Datum (NAP), so you can see at a glance whether the water level is normal, elevated or low — and thus how much room is left under the bridges.

Reports are automatically mapped and forwarded to the City of Amsterdam, so skippers, the city and police can work together towards safer waterways. Run into nuisance or an incident? File a report right away, or browse the current reports.
